OpenGraph.io came to be a product out of necessity! One of our current projects, which is at the time top secret, required that we provide a user with a preview of a post that would be made to social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Most people don’t realize that each of these networks utilize a protocol called Open Graph which allows websites to control how they are shared online. The biggest issue we came across is that the vast majority of sites out there simply don’t support Open Graph… hence OpenGraph.io.
OpenGraph.io is a REST API to gather Open Graph data. It’s approach to solving the problem above is quite simple. If Open Graph data exists for a site we will provide that information back to you so you don’t have to write complicated and error prone code that scrapes it off of websites – that’s the easy part. For the majority of sites out there that don’t provide Open Graph data, we will infer the information based on content found in that page. All of this happens very fast using a lightning quick, NodeJS powered, REST API. Even better, the service will be free for most people, even when they start to get decent traction. Once you make it over 10,000 requests per month, we will charge you $0.15 for every 1000 requests after that.
